Innovative Community Action Network
Combines service to the community with student learning within the existing curriculum in a way that improves both the student and the community. A reflective component reinforces the concept that helping others is an important, worthwhile and satisfying experience.
The Two Part Mission of iCAN
Community Action: communicate the many Lyme-Old Lyme community service activities already implemented in the district to the Board of Education and community, parents, staff and students.
Service Learning: develop and integrate guaranted Service Learning Experiences into the existing K-12 curriculum for Grades 1,4,7 and High School Civics.
Students' Guaranteed Service Learning Projects
Grade 1: plan and participate in school wide patriotic and environmental programs.
Grade 4 (Lyme Consolidated School): work with High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center to maintain and enhance nature trails.
Grade 4 (Center School): write letters that educate, express opinions and persuade.
Grade 7: interview, write, illustrate and share personalized storybooks with first graders.
High School Civics: develop unique class project to demonstrate civic responsibility.
Numerous other activities are conducted in classes throughout the district that reflect civic responsibility developed through curricular learning.
