Machu Picchu was officially discovered on July 24, 1911. Today, Machu Picchu is a small area located in Peru. The city itself was built around 1450, during the height of the Inca empire, but it was abandoned about 100 years later, in 1572. This was a result of the Spanish conquest. Machu Picchu is located in Peru, and is a very famous tourist attraction.
