I've mentored students for a variety of independent study courses, including Advanced Engineering Desigh Architectural Design, CNC Machining, Digital Photography and Photography.

The independent study program at LOLHS gives students the opportunity to explore in depth an area or topic appropriate to the curriculum built around his/her own interests and abilities. An independent study application form and outline must be picked up from the School Counseling Department, filled out completely, and approved by the student, parent, teacher, school counselor, and Principal BEFORE any such program can be initiated for credit.

There are no specific requirements for the project; it may include research, experimenting, reading, or writing; it may take him outside the school; it may result in a paper, or audio-visual presentation. The program will be completely flexible to accommodate all types of students, regardless of ability and interests.

Guidelines for Independent Study Program
  1. The student must present an outline of his/her project to his/her School Counselor and Principal for approval before he/she will be enrolled in the course. An independent study request form must also be completed.
  2. The student will meet periodically with his/her advisor during the marking period on a prearranged schedule.
  3. At the end of the marking period, the instructor will submit a grade on the project or activity to the School Counseling Department.  Typically, grading for independent studies is done on a “pass/fail” basis unless numeric grading is requested and approved at the time of application.
